Surgery of the breast is performed
to enhance or minimize the size or shape of a breast
for cosmetic, medical or reconstructive reasons.
Breast
Reduction
(Reduction
Mammaplasty)
Large, pendulous breasts may cause a woman to potentially
experience various medical problems caused by the excessive weight
of the breast tissue. Medical problems commonly associated with this condition
might include: skeletal deformities, back and
neck pain, posture changes, skin irritations and breathing problems.
Bra straps often leave indentations in the shoulder area. These
issues may affect a woman or young girls's emotional state or
confidence.

Breast
Augmentation
(Augmentation Mammaplasty)
Breast augmentation is a very popular
procedure for women and among the most commonly performed
cosmetic surgery procedures.
The use of saline filled implants to enhance
the fullness of the female breast shape and form is accomplished
through a small incision in the fold or natural crease of the
breast. The surgery requires a saline-filled implant inserted under the crease in the breast, around the nipple or
through the armpit. The implant can be placed under the breast tissue or beneath
the chest wall muscle. After surgery, breasts will appear "fuller"
and more shapely in contour. Selection of size and shape are
discussed throughout the consultation process and subsequently
through the planning stages. Incision scars will fade or disappear
over time. Our goal is to provide an enhanced breast with true
natural form. It has been and remains a major emphasis
of this practice.
Breast
Lift
(Mastopexy)
Over time, the effects of gravity
along with the loss of the skin's natural elasticity begin to have
an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts. These factors,
combined with pregnancies, nursing or weight loss, will often cause
the breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness.
A breast lift, or
mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape the breast.
The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker
skin surrounding the nipple). Saline filled breast implants inserted
in conjunction with a mastopexy procedure can increase both firmness
and size.
Breast
Symmetry
Is a term used to describe treatment for breast asymmetry. Difference in size, shape, or nipple position through various techniques is corrected depending on a patient's particular needs.
Breast
Reconstruction
Restores or establishes the appearance of breasts that have been surgically removed or altered because of cancer or disease. Breast reconstruction can help a woman’s breasts look balanced while wearing a bra, permanently regain breast contour, and give the convenience of not needing an external prosthesis.
The approach to breast surgery involves every to meet the patient's individual needs inthree stages. 1) Initial use of an expander or implant to stretch the tissue eventually used to cover the implant. 2) Removal and replacement of the implant to provide enhanced breast definition. 3) Reconstruction of nipple and areolar complex when appropriate.
Our 10 years of experience at Hackensack University
Medical Center has resulted in a successful, staged
sequence that has provided reconstruction to men and women. The majority of reconstruction inthis practice is done with the initial use of an expander or implant that stretches the tissues that will eventuallybe used to cover the implant. A second stage of removing this implant is then used to provide further definition to the breast and exchange the first implant for the final size and shape. A third stage is used to reconstruct the nipple areolar complex in those patients who require this.
All phases are accomplished under anesthesia and can, in most cases, be performed as an out-patient procedure.
We have included some post-operative demonstrations of implants used to correct total or near total loss of breasts due to cancer.
